Statement on Aston Resident Hall at GWU

WASHINGTON, DC, AUGUST 10, 2023 – I am disappointed to see the efforts made to block the conversion of an old George Washington University dorm-Aston Residence Hall to become a high-barrier non-congregate shelter to serve our most vulnerable residents.

Influential power brokers are donating millions of dollars to prevent housing while many of our government officials stay quiet to prevent political blowback. I refuse to be silent on the matter.

Housing is a human right. DC Government has failed many of our neighbors with the lack of support and resources they desperately need. In a time where we are seeing hurricane warnings and floods, we should be using every opportunity possible to house our unhoused neighbors in safe, stable, and comfortable housing.

I look forward to seeing Aston Residence Hall fulfill a new purpose in serving our neighbors. I will work tirelessly as Councilmember to continue this work and bring bold and innovative solutions to end our housing crisis.
